Условное предложение 2 типа
Условные предложения 2-го типа, в отличие от предложений 1-го типа (см. Condition: type 1), описывают не реальную, а воображаемую (маловероятную или нереальную) ситуацию, которая могла бы иметь место в настоящем или будущем времени. ср. If someone tried to blackmail me I would tell the police - Если бы кто-то пытался шантажировать меня, я непременно сообщил бы в полицию.
1) Глагол употребляется в прошедшем времени (чаще всего Past simple); в главном предложении употребляется конструкция would + bare infinitive. ( Вместо would может использоваться модальный глагол, см. Modals in condition).

If you saw a ghost, what would you do? — Что бы ты сделал, если бы увидел привидение?

2) Употребление was и were.
В условных придаточных (особенно в официальной речи) вместо was обычно употребляется were, то есть форма сослагательного наклонения (см. Subjunctive) . В выражении if I were you возможно только were.

It would be a very disastrous thing for you if I were / was caught. — Если бы меня поймали, для тебя это было бы катастрофой.

I wouldn't say anything about it if I were you. — На твоем месте я бы не стал ничего об этом говорить.

3) if + was / were + to-infinitive.
Вместо глагола в прошедшем времени в придаточном предложении может употребляться конструкция was / were + to-infinitive (см. be to, 4). Возможна инверсия, но только с глаголом were (см. Inversion in condition).

What would we do if I were to lose my job? — Чтобы мы стали делать, если бы я потерял работу?
